Strikeforce bantamweight champ Ronda Rousey has watched her profile skyrocket since making her debut a little more than a year ago, emerging as the face of women’s MMA and now teetering on the brink of mainstream popularity similar to the success experienced by Gina Carano . Following in Carano’s footsteps, Ronda also posed in the 2012 edition of ESPN the Magazine ’s “Body Issue” and, as it turns out, made the cover as well. A rare situation involving an injured fighter’s replacement making for a more intriguing match-up unfolded earlier today when the UFC announced Luiz Cane had withdrawn from a bout at UFC 150 against Yushin Okami and was replaced by feared submission-specialist Rousimar Palhares . Palhares and Okami are both coming off strike-based stoppages and are both in need of a big win to re-establish their place in the UFC’s middleweight division.
Bantamweights Takeya Mizugaki and Jeff Hougland have agreed to face off this fall with each looking to avoid back-to-back losses when they meet at UFC 151 . Both are coming off decision defeats with Mizugaki’s coming in controversial fashion to Chris Cariaso this past February and Hougland’s to Yves Jabouin last month.
The long-rumored Nate Marquardt-Tyron Woodley match for the vacant Strikeforce welterweight title seems on with the two apparently headed towards a July meeting with Portland serving as a probable home. No date has been announced but with the UFC holding events on July 7 and July 21 it seems likely the show will take place on 7/14 or 7/28. Along with Marquardt-Woodley, submission-specialist Roger Gracie is expected to face Keith Jardine on the card in addition to the Strikeforce middleweight title being featured with champion Luke Rockhold putting his gold up for grabs against Tim Kennedy
A little more than a year ago UFC lightweight Anthony Pettis was in position to challenge for the divisional strap. However, then-champion Frankie Edgar was booked in a rematch with Gray Maynard after the two fought to a Draw, forcing Pettis to choose between a period of inactivity or risking his go at the gold. “Showtime” bravely went with the latter, though his gamble ultimately backfired after he lost a decision to Clay Guida and saw his title-shot go up in smoke.
